University of Washington researcher Dr. Kathryn Baylis has been announced as the next president and CEO of the Association for Women in Science, Engineering, and Technology (AWSET). Baylis is a leader in maternal and child health research, and her work has focused on improving access to quality care for pregnant women and their children. She is also known for her work on reproductive justice and gender equity. “Kathryn Baylis has spent her career shattering barriers by helping people take control of their health,” said University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce. “She is an exemplary leader who will continue to make UW one of the leading public universities for women and girls.” Baylis joins AWSET from the University of Utah, where she served as president and CEO since 2017. The University of Washington has announced that Dr. Renee Hsia-Ling Chang will join the faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology effective July 1, 2019. Chang is a maternal and child health specialist with expertise in HIV/AIDS, maternal nutrition, contraception, breastfeeding and reproductive health care for women and young girls in low-income countries. She is also nationally certified in interventional radiology for gynecological procedures.

Chang received her doctorate from New York Medical College in 2016 after completing her residency at Harvard Medical School. During her time at NYUMC she served as an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Bellevue Hospital Center where she was also the co-director of its Maternal Child Health Program.

Job qualification

The University of Washington's new maternal and child health research program will be led by senior associate dean for research, Donna K. Kingston. Kingston is a nationally recognized expert in obstetric epidemiology and maternal mental health. She has authored or co-authored over 100 papers in these areas, and her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health.

"Very few programs focus on maternal and child health," Kingston said. "It's an important area to focus on because it's linked to so many chronic problems such as obesity, diabetes, asthma and heart disease."

The new program will have six investigators with joint appointments in the departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics, plus a geneticist. The investigators will investigate causes and prevention of birth defects, preterm birth, low birth weight and other pediatric diseases. They will also look at how maternal mental health affects childbirth outcomes.
